Renée Kathleen Zellweger was born in Katy, Texas on April 25, 1969, to parents Emil Erich Zellweger and Kjellfrid Irene.
She attended Katy High School and was an active cheerleader, drama club member, gymnast, and speech team member. After graduating from high school, she continued her studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in year 1991.
In Zellweger’s junior year she had to take a job as a cocktail waitress in Austin, Texas cause of her father lost his job and was unable to support her at college. During the job, she began getting small parts acting, and earned her Screen Actors Guild card for doing a Coors Light commercial.
At the beginning of her career, she appeared in several independent and low-budget films. Her first main role in a movie came with the 1994 horror film Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation which make her famous for the role.
In the same year 1994 she also played a woman who plans a robbery with her boyfriend in the crime comedy Love and a .45 which made Marc Savlov of Austin Chronicle noted “Zellweger’s character. The part earned her an Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance.
In 2000 she was part of the film Nurse Betty (also 2000), a black comedy directed by Neil LaBute. She played as Kansas waitress who suffers a nervous breakdown after witnessing her husband’s murder which made her won her first Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
