Fellow young Americans started worrying about being drafted into a potential war stemming from the strike. This has been news headlines all over the internet. Also, the hashtag for “World War 3” and “World War 3 draft” spiked on Google Search result and became trending topics on Twitter this weekend.

The attack threw social media punditry into overdrive and sent unverified or bogus information flying around the internet. Such as mentioned above. People are asking is it going to be a WW3? or are they going to be drafted very soon? How old to be drafted in the military? etc. Responding to this, The Selective Service System (SSA), the government agency that retains mandatory registration information on U.S. men for possible conscription, tweeted that their site is running pretty slow due to lots of people (high traffic) searching for information about the draft and verifying their registration.

How Old do You Have to Be Drafted?

According to SSA all men from 18 to 25 years old are required to register with the Selective Service System. But, Dr. Mittelstadt said that “Right now, registering for selective service really means nothing about the likelihood of you serving in the current military,”. Also, just because you have registered does not mean you will be drafted very soon.

FYI, earlier today, the Selective Service’s Twitter account reminded followers that a draft would need to be authorized legislatively by both Congress and President Trump. Due to the public support for a draft has already fallen since the end of the Vietnam War. Also, congress would have to pass a law to change that.

Is there going to be a military draft very soon?

As mentioned above, the draft itself was abolished after opposition to fighting in Vietnam (1973). To change that, Congress would have to pass a law reinstating the draft. Though it will not easy, both the President and Congress would have to sign it. and I sure you that it would be a very long journey to go.

But even though the draft is unlikely to return anytime soon, young people are still needed to join and be registered with the SSA. Update: here is how to dodge the draft if you don’t want to – 15 ways to avoid draft
